Gen Z Wants More Web3 Education, Research By Boss Beauties Shows

In Brief

Boss Beauties conducted a study to explore Gen Z’s attitudes and perspectives on web3.

More than half of young respondents expressed a desire for greater web3 education, particularly in schools.

Young women were more likely than young men to express a need for credible web3 resources.

Both young people and parents acknowledged a knowledge gap and lack of preparedness with web3.

The main motivations for Gen Z’s engagement in web3 include earning money, identity exploration, real-life benefits, community participation, and skill development.

Gen Z, the digital natives who grew up with the internet, hold valuable insights about their views on web3. Boss Beauties, a New York-based web3 organization, conducted a global study to explore Gen Z’s attitudes toward web3. The study surveyed 16 to 25-year-olds and parents in seven countries, and it covers web3 usage, knowledge gaps, risks, and future perspectives. By uncovering these insights, Boss Beauties sheds light on Gen Z and their parents’ perception of emerging technology.

The Knowledge Gap for Young People and Their Parents

The survey shows that more than half of the young respondents (52%) wished they had learned more about web3 at school, especially young women (36% more likely than young men). Outside of school, they also wanted more credible web3 resources, such as videos. Young women (51%) were more likely to express this need than young men. Parents and caregivers had similar views, with 53% wanting their children to learn more about web3 at school and 45% looking for more web3 resources outside of school.

The survey suggests that digital literacy is not enough to prepare young people for the future of the internet. There is a gap between digital natives and web3 natives that need to be bridged, especially for young women who were twice as likely as young men to say they were unfamiliar with crypto wallets.

Both young people and parents acknowledge that parents are ill-equipped to assist their children in learning about web3 and navigating its risks. Only a small percentage of young people (17%) believed that their parents could teach them about web3, and this sentiment was consistent across countries. Likewise, parents expressed their own lack of preparedness, with 39% globally feeling equipped to discuss online risks with their children. When asked about their familiarity with blockchain and web3, a significant number of women (67%) and men (53%) were unfamiliar or unsure. Few women (8%) and men (18%) claimed to be very familiar with blockchain, and 36% of women and 26% of men admitted not understanding what web3 entails.

Gen Z’s Web3 Engagement: Money, Gaming, and Relationship Dynamics

According to the findings, the main reason Gen Z participates in web3 is to earn money. This is true for both men and women in the UK, but women in Brazil value the social and environmental impact of web3. Other reasons include finding a safe space for their identity, getting real-life benefits, joining a community, and learning new skills. Surprisingly, career opportunities were not a top priority for respondents, despite web3 offering new professional paths. Roles like “Tokenomics Designer” and “Rust Core Developer” showcase the evolving work landscape in web3.

For young men, online gaming is the most common aspect of web3 engagement, while virtual communities are more popular among young women. However, a small minority of respondents, particularly young women, selected “Other” as their response, possibly indicating some confusion around the definition of web3. Some respondents provided examples that align more with web2, such as e-commerce, social media, and online shopping. The survey results emphasize the need to educate digital natives about the web3 opportunities, particularly in areas like NFTs and smart contracts. Respondents expressed a strong interest in learning more about DeFi and NFTs.

The survey further revealed that young people’s online and offline selves are aligned with their values and ethics. They also find it easier to start online relationships, but they value offline ones more. The findings were consistent across countries and genders.

Online relationships were a way to escape real-world problems for 38% of young women and 35% of young men. Online relationships were easier to start for 41% of young women and 46% of young men. They were also easier to keep for 38% of young women and 42% of young men.

However, online relationships were less meaningful than offline ones for most respondents. More than half of the respondents valued their offline relationships more. Only 6% of young women and 10% of young men valued their online relationships more.

Lisa Mayer, founder and CEO of Boss Beauties, commented on the findings:

“Policymakers, educators, and web3 companies all need to come together and ensure that young people and their parents have the tools and knowledge they need to stay safe and make informed decisions as they navigate this fast-changing digital space.”

“If used properly, web3 can allow Gen Z to feel empowered, connect with people around the world, and become the change-makers they want to be. But we know from history that when new technologies emerge, girls get left behind. Web3 will only continue to grow in the years to come, so it is essential we act now to make sure girls are able to understand this technology, preparing them for the future of the workforce and for how the world is changing.”

The Boss Beauties’ survey of 3,869 young people and parents shares the perspectives surrounding web3. The findings highlight the importance of understanding young people’s digital presence, the concerns of parents, and the potential of web3 in shaping the future.
