NFTs unlock access to the New York Fashion Week and exclusive fashion drops
Some New York Fashion Week attendants will also be NFT holders, as five New York designers will release five NFT keys that unlock the fashion show and provide utilities. The benefits include limited edition drops, designer collectibles, access to coveted experiences, runway seats, and after-party invites. There will be 250 NFTs in total (50 keys per designer), each costing $100.
“Fashion week has always been a walled garden that is difficult to access, and Web3 can be a democratizing force,”
the project’s contributor and Web3 advisor Jenny Wang told Vogue Business.
Collectors can buy NFTs with Ethereum, credit cards, or via Afterpay, which is also a partner of the NYFW’s NFT project. The entire proceeds from the mint will be donated to the Free Arts NYC charity.
To bring more people into the market, Afterpay additionally offers 250 free NFTs that provide access to the Talks sessions at Spring Sessions, the NYFW members-only group on Instagram, and a six-month free trial for TIDAL HiFi Plus.
The participating designers are AnOnlyChild, Altu by Altuzarra, Jonathan Simkhai, Kim Shui, and The Blonds. Womenswear fashion designer Kim Shui is the Serenity Key creator who created NFTs to connect metaverse products (digital garment airdrops) with real-life events (NYFW tickets).
“I think Web3 changes the way consumers and brands connect. It changes the relationship,”
Shui told Vogue Business.
Keys to NYFW also shared on Twitter that the NFT project aims to change the belief that “NYFW feels elite and exclusive – like a velvet rope that only a privileged few can access.” Through blockchain-enabled tools, the show seeks to open doors to a broader audience.
There are going to be even more Web3 experiences in the NYFW. Tommy Hilfiger is preparing a metaverse show in the Roblox version of New York City.
