Qatar Airways will add NFTs and ticket purchases to its Metaverse QVerse
Qatar Airways is further developing its Metaverse and digital space. The state-owned airline will be adding NFTs and ticket purchases to its virtual world, QVerse.
The QVerse launched in April and was created by one of the most advanced 3D creation tools, Epic Games’ Unreal Engine. The airline’s digital world is a VR platform that helps passengers navigate, check-in for flights at Hamad International Airport (HIA), and take a virtual tour of the airplane’s interior cabin.
“With physical boundaries beginning to be challenged by the metaverse on an increasingly larger scale, it is exciting to embrace a technology that enables all travel enthusiasts to enjoy a unique immersive experience of our award-winning products and services,” said Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker.
Aside from NFTs, the company intends to make the QVerse accessible via other Metaverse platforms such as The Sandbox and Decentraland, as well as make it compatible with the Oculus Quest VR.
“We are currently focusing on creating our metaverse rather than investing in Decentraland or Sandbox. But we do not rule out this plan. We continue to explore how we can develop this area and strategically incorporate NFTs into QVerse,” according to Baker.
Last year, Qatar Airways partnered with IATA to become the first airline in the Middle East to adopt the IATA Blockchain Digital Passport.
There have been very few airlines entering the Web3 space. In November 2021, Latvian airBaltic became the first airline in the world to showcase its NFTs in the Metaverse. In May, UAE’s Emirates launched the Metaverse experience and NFTs for customers and employees and announced plans to accept Bitcoin as a payment option for the airline’s services.
Qatar Airways is expected to have a busy year since it will be hosting the World Cup 2022. Last month, the airline held the first-ever Metaverse FIFA22 tournament. The company believes the future of human relations will be through the Metaverse, which “will empower human beings, expand their horizons, and break their limits by challenging the most basic methods that were once limitations.”
