FC Barcelona and Plastiks Launch a Sustainability-Oriented NFT Collection
In Brief
Football Club Barcelona partners with NFT marketplace Plastiks to release sustainability-oriented NFTs.
Digital card owners can win an official Barca jersey signed by thirteen players of the team.
Football Club Barcelona partners with NFT marketplace Plastiks to release sustainability-oriented non-fungible tokens. FC Barcelona’s second NFT collection aims to engage fans in the plastic waste problem.
Notably, this is one of the first sustainable non-fungible token collections ever released. According to the project’s website, by purchasing one NFT, collectors recover 10 to 15 kilograms of plastic waste, an equivalent of 1,081 to 1,621 plastic bottles. Overall, the collection will allow for the recovery of at least 1,000,000 kilograms of plastic pollution. This amount corresponds to 35,000,000 one-later plastic bottles.
The release, called “Unleash Your Passion,” features 3,000 NFT artworks of animals affected by plastic and waste. Among these are turtles, whales, toucans, and rhinos.
Digital card owners will have the possibility of winning an official Barca jersey signed by thirteen players on the team.
The collection includes NFTs that go for $20 and $30. When minting an NFT, collectors will receive one and two tickets for the lottery, respectively. The lottery will take place on June 22. Individuals can already purchase digital collectibles on Plastiks’s NFT marketplace.
Fans support environmental initiatives through the proceeds from the sale of each asset. It’s an opportunity for FC Barcelona fans to contribute to society while reaping the benefits of their participation. “Your passion for sports has the power to change the world,” states the promotional video.
Notably, this is not the Football Club’s first non-fungible token release. In July 2022, the Club issued a one-of-one edition audio-visual digital artwork. Called “In a way, immortal,” the cinematic piece was produced by Digital Superstudio. They sold the artwork for $693,000 at Sotheby’s auction in New York.
