Anthropic, a company created by ex-employees of OpenAI that has received over $700 million in funding so far, has unveiled an AI system. Claude is comparable to OpenAI’s ChatGPT but is, according to Anthropic, superior to the original in a number of important aspects.
As part of a closed beta, the Anthropic system dubbed Claude is accessible through Slack integration. The entire system is under closed beta. Claude was made using a method termed “Constitutional AI” that was created by Anthropic. The company explains that Constitutional AI aims to give a “rules-based” approach to aligning AI systems with human intents, enabling AI like ChatGPT to respond to queries using a straightforward set of principles as a guide.
In essence, Claude is a statistical word prediction tool similar to ChatGPT and other language models. Claude learned how often words are to emerge based on patterns, such as the semantic context of the surrounding text, by gathering a sizable number of text examples from the Internet. As a result, it is able to engage in open dialogue, tell jokes, and provide his thoughts on a number of subjects.
As it tends to explain what it has said and inquire about how it may help, Claude is described as being “usually closer to what is required of him” but “less concise.” However, it accurately responds to more straightforward inquiries, particularly those pertaining to culture, geography, history, and fundamental math, and does so without the additional “crap” that ChatGPT occasionally adds.
- Anthropic, a San Francisco-based startup, is looking to grow even more this year. With a team of 40 people and an office full of plants, the company is focusing on culture and governance to ensure it can continue to develop safe AI systems responsibly.
- Thanks to a $124 million Series A financing in 2021, led by Sam Bankman-Fried, the CEO of the now-defunct FTX, Anthropic was able to raise the Series B round. Jim McClave, Nishad Singh, Jaan Tallinn, Caroline Ellison, and the Center for Emerging Risk Research (CERR) also participated in the round.
