Eurovision winner Kalush Orchestra sells their trophy for 500 ETH to support the Ukrainian army
Recent Eurovision winner Kalush Orchestra sold their Glass Microphone trophy in an auction for over $900,000, or 500 ETH. The money will be sent to the Ukrainian army to support the nation’s forces during the conflict with Russia. Kalush Orchestra is one of the most popular rap bands in Ukraine and won the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 with the song “Stefania.”
The highest bid was made by the Estonian crypto exchange company Whitebit. Apart from the physical trophy, Whitebit will also receive an NFT. The band’s lead vocalist, Oleg Psyuk, also auctioned off the pink bucket hat that he wore during performances. He raised an additional $370,000 for the Ukrainian military.
“You guys are amazing. We appreciate each and every one of you who donated to this auction and a special thanks to the team WhiteBit who purchased the trophy for $900,000 and are now the rightful owners of our trophy,” Kalush Orchestra wrote on Facebook.
The auction was hosted by the newly-opened Meta History: Museum of War. The NFT platform is focused on aiding Ukraine and celebrated the winning bid on Twitter, calling it “a victory of Ukraine and the cryptocurrency world.”
The band revealed that the donation will be allocated to the Serhiy Pyrtula Charity Foundation and used to buy three military-grade drones.
It’s the first time in history that Eurovision winners have sold their Glass Microphone trophy. Kalush Orchestra expressed sincere support for their homeland and took the heroic step of raising funds for Ukraine’s army.
