DraftKings and PGA Tour Are Set to Launch an NFT-Backed Fantasy Game
In Brief
DraftKings and PGA Tour announce the launch of an NFT-based fantasy golf game, coming on March 1.
Players will have a chance to compete for shares of million of cash in prizes.
Sports betting platform DraftKings announced the launch of an NFT-backed fantasy golf game. The platform partnered with the PGA Tour, the organizer of professional golf tours, to develop this initiative.
The next-generation fantasy-style golf game is the extension of DraftKings’ Reignmakers franchise. Reignmakers PGA Tour will allow users to collect digital golfer cards featuring noted golf players. It’s worth noting that the drop is a DraftKings exclusive, so NFT holders will only be able to trade the cards on DraftKings’ marketplace.
Using the collectible cards from their collections, players will be able to build weekly golf lineups and rack up points based on players’ performances in real life. Competitors will even have a chance to win shares of millions of dollars in prizes every week during the PGA Tour season.
Reignmakers PGA Tour will go live on March 1. First, the companies will launch the premium Greens Pass NFTs, which grant holders access to season-long rewards and other benefits. Following this, on March 6, DraftKings will release the first set of PGA player cards on its marketplace. Notably, the drop will happen before The Players Championship, which is scheduled for March 9 to 12.
This is the third fantasy sports game of the DraftKings’ Reignmakers franchise. The company has previously released experiences based on UFC and football.
Generally speaking, sports-related digital collectibles games are rather popular. In January this year, the NFT-backed fantasy sports game Sorare signed a four-year agreement with the Premier League. In September 2022, the platform partnered with NBA to develop an NFT basketball game.
