From Players to Creators: How Roblox is Democratizing Content Creation with the Help of Generative AI
In Brief
Roblox is testing a generative AI tool for its creators to speed up the process of building and altering in-game objects.
The tool allows players to easily create various things, such as buildings, terrain, and avatars by typing natural language commands.
A popular metaverse gaming platform Roblox is taking steps to make game creation faster and easier for its users. The company is currently testing a tool that uses artificial intelligence to write code and speed up the process of building and altering in-game objects. With the tool, players can easily create buildings, terrain, and avatars and modify their appearance and behavior by typing natural language commands.
Roblox already has a creator platform with free tools, services, and support to build immersive 3D experiences. Its platform, Roblox Studio, allows creators to publish their work on all popular platforms that reach nearly 59 million people daily worldwide. The California-based company is now looking to leverage generative AI techniques to expand Roblox Studio, allowing every Roblox user to become a creator.
A Roblox experience comprises different 3D objects, like constructive solid geometry, avatars, meshes, and terrain, connected through Lua scripting and supported by a universal physics engine. While the engine is essential, it’s the creator’s responsibility to build everything into the experience. Generative AI tools can help with these creative processes by increasing creator productivity and decreasing the technical skill required to bring ideas to life.
“For example, some creators know how to code, but may have limited experience creating high-fidelity 3D models. Others may be more experienced with model design, but less experienced with code. In both cases, we see a future in which even a beginner (such as myself for example – I’m a terrible artist!) can get a running head start as they look to bring their imagination to life in a Roblox experience,”
wrote Daniel Sturman, CTO of Roblox.
To make creation more accessible to typical users, the team aims to provide tools that are significantly more intuitive and natural, such as voice and text or touch-based gestures, rather than intricate mouse and keyboard movements.
Roblox recognizes that this vision involves unique technical challenges, such as building tools that are suited to what a user would create and how they might fit into an in-experience creation environment, as well as creating a fast and scalable moderation flow for all types of creation.

Roblox recognizes that this vision involves unique technical challenges, such as building tools suited to what a user would create and how they might fit into an in-experience creation environment, as well as creating a fast and scalable moderation flow for all types of creation.
However, can building games or in-game experiences become too effortless with technology? While generative AI can automate certain repetitive or time-consuming tasks, it can’t replace the creativity, imagination, and game design skills of the creator. The output generated by AI tools may not always meet the creator’s standards, and there may be a need for manual editing and refinement. Therefore, generative AI can be a useful tool for game or experience makers, but it’s unlikely to make game creation so easy that anyone can do it without any effort or skill. We’ll see how the technology will work in creating the Roblox experience in the future.
