RTFKT unveils Cryptokicks, the futuristic IRL smart sneakers
In Brief
RTFKT unveils the upcoming physical smart footwear line, Cryptokicks
The shoes will feature auto-lacing, lighting, and accelerometers
The items will also have WM chips that enable dynamic access for the linked Artefacts
Creator-led studio RTFKT brings to light its smart-footwear line, Cryptokicks. Steven Vasilev and Chris Le, the organization’s co-founders, shared a sneak peek during the “Merging Worlds: Fashion, Lore, and Empowering Creators” panel in Miami.
So, the company will soon release physical sneakers with several futuristic functionalities. For instance, there will be auto-lacing, lighting, and accelerometers.
The physical sneakers will become the first “true” web3 shoes. Thanks to the incrusted WM chips, holders will be able to get dynamic access for the linked authenticated Artefacts and unlock IRL quests. It’s worth noting that the chips will be upgradable.
According to the official Discord server of the company, the sneakers’ release will become the beginning of RTFKT’s World Merging. However, Cryptokicks is not the company’s first phygital initiative.
In December 2021, sportswear giant Nike acquired RTFKT. The two then released several phygital sneakers, accessories, and clothing items. Among these are the RTFKT Space Drip x Nike Air Force 1 shoes and the RTFKT x Nike AR Hoodies.
Holders can already start the linking process of their physical items by scanning the embedded WM chip.
The WM chips are embedded on the back heel of the sneakers, right under the RTFKT logo. On clothing items, holders can find them on the size labels. The scanning process is a true world-forging event. To scan the near-field communication tags, holders need to press the phone’s camera or move it over the tag so that the camera touches it. Following, a banner appears on the phone, inviting users to continue the linking process.
