Gaming ecosystem READYgg recently raised $4 million in a funding round and has appointed former Sony president Shawn Layden as an advisor to the company. With a robust background spanning over 30 years in the industry, Layden will reportedly play a pivotal role in advancing ownership gaming within the burgeoning READYgg ecosystem.
Shawn Layden is renowned for his tenure as president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America and brings a wealth of experience to his new advisory role at READYgg. As an advocate for community-centric gaming, Layden aims to empower players within the READYgg ecosystem.
The appointment as an advisor to READYgg comes hot on the heels of the company’s successful completion of a new funding round in December 2023.
The $4 million infusion came from strategic partners including NeoTokyo, Delphi Digital, Merit Circle, Momentum6, Purechain Capital, Alex Becker and Token Metrics Ventures. The company said the funds will be utilized to drive READYgg’s mission of mainstream ownership gaming.
Shawn Layden is expected to facilitate connections between READYgg, influential publishers, and global game studios through his extensive industry tenure and network. Moreover, he will also raise awareness about the significant potential of ownership gaming to rejuvenate game economics and ensure more equitable player outcomes.
“Ownership gaming can foster shared experiences, enhance in-game achievements, and unlock new opportunities for players who are rewarded for their playing hours. This model enables gamers to permanently own the assets, reputation, and profile they cultivate and leverage it to unlock new horizons for engagement,” Layden stated.
Layden’s responsibilities at READYgg will also include advising on go-to-market strategy and accelerating the mainstream adoption of this emerging gaming standard. Additionally, he will provide insights on optimizing game design to enhance the value of ownership gaming strategies in AA and AAA titles.
READYgg asserts that its ownership gaming model powered by web3 technologies has recently experienced a surge following the success of titles, including Runestone Keeper.
The roguelike dungeon crawler has demonstrated impressive key performance indicators (KPIs) since transitioning to a web3 model, including increased player engagement, retention, and time spent in-game.
Development costs in traditional gaming have escalated, notably due to the rise in user acquisition expenses in recent years. Ownership gaming aims to empower developers with additional monetization channels and significantly reduce user acquisition costs, thereby improving profitability.
As a spokesperson for READYgg, Shawn Layden will advocate for AAA studios to consider ownership gaming as a strategy for improving their business by reducing development and user acquisition costs. Developers will have the opportunity to enhance their gaming experiences by introducing genuine asset ownership, integrating cross-game capabilities, and implementing reputational capital concepts.
