Mythical Games, a next-generation game technology company, has teamed up with the National Football League (NFL) and NFL Players Association to launch the first blockchain-based game on both the Apple iOS App Store and Google Android Play Store. The game, titled NFL Rivals, has already gone live on both platforms and introduces NFTs to the mobile gaming space.
The National Football League and Mythical Games first announced NFL Rivals, the league’s first official play-to-earn Web3-powered video game, last year in May. The gaming company is led by game industry veterans who have worked on major franchises including Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Guitar Hero, Marvel Strike Force, Farmville, and Skylanders.
However, the game’s launch is not the only major announcement from Mythical Games. The company is planning to move its Mythical Chain to the Polkadot ecosystem, favoring it over Ethereum due to its decentralized and interoperable multichain network.
In free-to-play NFL Rivals, players can act as general managers and play arcade-style games as their favorite NFL players. Blockchain technology enables players to purchase, collect, and trade NFTs through Mythical Games’ online marketplace. These digital items provide access to exclusive events and in-game rewards for users.
Mythical Games CEO John Linden is optimistic that NFL Rivals will be the first blockchain-powered game to enter the highly lucrative mobile gaming market. The company expects NFL Rivals to have over 10 million players this year. Upon signing up to play the game, users will have immediate access to a digital wallet, which they can use to trade digital assets. Linden believes this will lead to a significant increase in the game’s user base as players become aware of NFL Rivals’ tradeable economy.
In the past year, the NFL has launched several Web3 projects, including a partnership with Reddit to create Polygon NFT avatars for the Super Bowl. The NFL also held a free Super Bowl LVII concert on Roblox featuring hip-hop artist Saweetie from Warner Records.
