ETHBarcelona 2023 Brought 1800+ Attendees and 180 Speakers in an Inspiring Crypto Event
In Brief
Last week, ETHBarcelona 2023 united crypto enthusiasts for a three-day conference and hackathon, featuring a diverse range of web3-related tracks.
The event embraced the themes of SolarPunk and LunarPunk, exploring the intersection of sustainability, privacy, and security.
Over 1,000 attendees and 180 speakers from around the world participated, fostering a vibrant community.
ETHBarcelona united crypto enthusiasts for the second time in a three-day conference (July 5–7) and hackathon (July 7–9). The conference’s theme – SolarPunk and LunarPunk – is inspired by optimistic visions of a future where humanity and nature coexist harmoniously.
The topic also reflects Ethereum’s reach for eco-friendliness, particularly evident during the Merge, which aims to significantly reduce the network’s energy consumption. The second focus of ETHBarcelona this year was exploring how web3 can contribute to security, focusing on ZK technology and its potential for safeguarding privacy.
The Ethereum event in Barcelona garnered over 1,000 attendees and more than 180 speakers from all over the world. A slightly smaller crowd than last year, but just as passionate.
The event featured four aptly named venues for panels and talks: Solar Stage, Moon Stage, Stellar Room, and Space Lab. Solar Stage was a spacious and bright auditorium, while Moon Stage was a smaller and dimmer hall. The Stellar Room hosted debates in a boxing ring with gym equipment around it, inviting anyone who wanted to join inside the ring. Finally, Space Lab on the second floor offered a large workspace for workshops and hands-on activities.
Reflecting the diverse applications of the Ethereum network, ETHBarcelona 2023 encompassed a wide range of web3-related tracks, including Art and NFTs, Web3 Social, DAOs and Coordination, DeFi and dApps, Metaverse and Gaming, Public Goods and Education, Infrastructure and Scalability, and Privacy and Security.
The event featured a lineup of distinguished experts, such as Vlad Zamfir from Smart Transactions, Mario Havel from the Ethereum Foundation, Miguel Piedrafita from Worldcoin, Vadim Krekotin from Cryptomeria Capital, Dieter Sommer from Dfinity, Web3 researcher Daniel Lumi, and numerous others.
One of the organizers and the founder of DoinGud, Manu Alzuru, said ETHBarcelona aims to use web3 technology for positive transformation, fostering a sustainable community that values ethics, freedom, sovereignty, and privacy. “Our event is more than a conference; it is a festival of ideas, a celebration of knowledge exchange that transcends boundaries.”
Art and Activities At ETHBarcelona 2023
Similar to the previous year, ETHBarcelona 2023 provided a display of NFT-based artwork in a distinct setting. The art was showcased through pictures and screens arranged on metal structures. Notably, a significant portion of the artwork featured female figures, possibly reflecting the event’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity (the event’s preliminary data revealed 50% female speakers and 40% female attendees). The art pieces also encompassed futuristic and surrealist styles, space context, and digital moving images.
ETHBarcelona was further enhanced by the vibrant purple lights and captivating wall installations, which added a visual appeal. Attendees could observe a live painting session by a talented graffiti artist who skillfully transformed a blank space on a wall into an orange and blue-eyed cat.
The Cultural Hall came alive with music performances featuring a new DJ taking the stage every hour or two. Also, attendees could play four retro games, such as Nintendo Game Boy and Street Fighter II, or join meditation and breathwork sessions in the Recharge Zone nearby.
The conference’s location was conveniently close to the beach, just a 10-minute walk away. Surely, some participants took advantage of the proximity in the sunny Spanish mid-summer.
Events like this play an important role in the crypto community by offering a real-life space for knowledge-sharing, networking, and collaboration. ETHBarcelona served as a catalyst, inspiring participants and fostering project development powered by Ethereum. Moreover, the conference once again showcased the potential of blockchain and highlighted the importance of collective efforts in driving innovation and shaping a brighter tomorrow.
