ChatGPT’s watermarks can help Google detect AI generated text

In Brief

The watermark is a secret signal that can be used to prove that the text was generated by ChatGPT

OpenAI, the corporation behind ChatGPT, has announced plans to introduce a new watermarking feature to help Google detect AI generated text. Watermarked text in ChatGPT will include cryptography in the form of embedding a word pattern, letters, and punctuation in the form of a secret code. Changing the word pattern used in the generated content is a way to watermark text so that the system can easily determine whether it was the product of an AI text generator.

The ChatGPT chatbot has already gained international acclaim and is an incredible tool that online publishers, affiliates, and SEO specialists both adore and fear. Some people like it because they discover new ways to use it to create summaries of content, plans, and complex articles. Online publishers fear AI content will flood search results, crowding out expert articles written by real people.

This feature is important because it can help Google detect AI generated text. Google can then take action to prevent the misuse of AI.

With this new watermarking feature, Google will be able to detect AI generated text and distinguish it from human-written content. This is a positive development for those who are concerned about the impact of AI on the quality of online content.

ChatGPTT watermarks are not currently in use. However, Scott Aaronson, a scientist at OpenAI, officially stated that this is planned.

Essentially, whenever GPT generates some long text, we want there to be an imperceptible secret signal in its choice of words that you can use to later prove that yes, it comes from GPT

the scientist noted

OpenAI positions watermarking as a way to prevent the misuse of AI that harms humanity.
