Canon Unveils VR Camera Prototype at Photo Next 2023

In Brief

Canon debuts a concept camera at Photo Next 2023, showcasing its potential in virtual reality photography.

In its folded state, the camera functions as a standard 360° 2D camera, while unfolding it allows for immersive 180° 3D VR content.

Canon’s entry into the VR camera market signals a potential shift in focus toward virtual reality technology.

At the recent Photo Next 2023 exhibition in Yokohama, Japan, Canon introduced a VR consumer camera. The folding hybrid camera prototype showcases the ability to capture 180° stereoscopic and 360° monoscopic photos and videos, presenting a new dimension in visual storytelling. The details, such as its name, model number, and potential market release, remain undisclosed.

The camera boasts a versatile 360/180 3D hybrid configuration, enabling flexible VR shooting. When folded, the camera functions as a conventional 360º 2D camera, with its lenses positioned back-to-back. However, upon unfolding, the lenses align side by side, enabling the capture of immersive 180º 3D VR content. DIY Photography also noted that, although the physical appearance may differ, the functionality resembles the Insta360 EVO.

In 2021, Canon made a significant move into VR video shooting with the release of the EOS VR System. It’s a 3D 180° VR capture platform that consists of two key components: the Canon RF 5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye lens and the Canon EOS R5 camera. The system can capture 8K, 3D, and 180° VR footage.

However, the camera showcased this time is specifically designed for consumer use, distinguishing it from the EOS VR series. The new camera belongs to the V series category of PowerShot, marking an exciting expansion into a previously unexplored area for Canon.

While consumer interest in VR has been slow, the recent entry of Apple into the market has garnered interest. Canon’s new camera could catalyze more innovation and growth in the VR industry, as it offers a new dimension to visual storytelling. Besides, Canon’s home country, Japan, has also been quick to adopt the latest technologies.
