Neeva Ceases Consumer Search Engine, Shifts Focus to AI

In Brief

Neeva, the privacy-focused search company, has made the decision to shut down its consumer search engine.

The founders cite challenges in attracting new users and the current economic environment as reasons for the discontinuation.

Neeva will now concentrate on exploring the applications of AI and potential opportunities in the enterprise space.

Neeva, once the ambitious competitor to Google, has decided to shut down its consumer search engine to focus on AI. The Mountain View-based company, known for its privacy-centric approach, revealed this development through a blog post penned by its founders, former Google executives Sridhar Ramaswamy and Vivek Raghunathan. They cited several obstacles, including the struggle to attract new users and the challenging economic situation, as factors leading to the drastic change within the company.

Neeva recognized that their current path was not leading to long-term viability as a business. While it’s discontinuing consumer search services, the company is eager to continue the journey in the enterprise space, focusing on providing effective, affordable, secure, and responsible utilization of LLMs (large language models).

Neeva acknowledged its endeavor to integrate AI into the search engine landscape, revolutionizing how information is accessed. The company is proud to be “the first search engine to provide cited, real-time AI answers.” The team is actively exploring how to apply their expertise in search and LLMs within enterprise settings, promising updates on their future endeavors in the coming weeks.

“This was a very tough decision that took into account lots of things: our business progress so far, the current funding environment and our ability to continue to grow quickly in this vastly changed search environment. We are incredibly proud of what we have accomplished: building a search engine from scratch with a tiny team of fifty people and releasing the world’s first LLM powered answer engine that produced reliable citations,”

Ramaswamy wrote on Twitter.

The company’s future now hinges on leveraging AI technology, and there are rumors of a possible acquisition by Snowflake, as reported by The Information.

According to the blog post, Neeva has assured its users who had subscribed to Neeva Premium, the paid subscription service, that they will receive a reimbursement for the remaining unused period. As part of the shutdown process, the company will be deleting all user data, ensuring the protection of privacy for its users.
