Barbie Movie Inspires a Wave of AI-Generated Creative Content
In Brief
The success of the Barbie movie has led to a surge of AI-generated creative content celebrating the famous doll.
From AI-generated animations and mashup trailers to selfie generators and a Barbie-inspired fashion collection, fans use AI technology to express their love for Barbie in imaginative ways.
The movie’s impact on popular culture extends beyond the big screen, inspiring fans to explore the possibilities of AI and creativity while celebrating Barbie’s empowering and iconic figure.
The world is going crazy for Barbie, the movie that has shattered all expectations and records at the box office. The film, directed by Greta Gerwig, is not only a hit among critics and audiences but also a milestone for women in Hollywood. It has the biggest opening weekend for a female director, with $356 million in global ticket sales. It also has the most significant domestic opening for a non-superhero film or sequel and is on track to be the fastest female-targeted movie to reach $300 million.
Barbie movie has spawned a wave of merchandise, art, and online content, inspiring fans to use AI to create their versions of the iconic doll’s representations. Here are some examples of Barbie-inspired creative content that celebrates the remarkable film and the power of technology.
barbAI – AI-generated animation
The short animation had its imperfections, yet it managed to captivate. It opens with a music track and a distorted doll’s face. Moreover, its narrative follows an incoherent sequence, touching on Barbie’s best day and then focusing on her unicorn companion, Sparklemunch. There’s a quirky moment where she instructs Ken to wear his best shirt because they’re going “unicorn shopping.” The dialogues may seem disconnected, but they are oddly engaging to watch. Unexpectedly, Oppenheimer appears at Barbie’s party, adding a surprising twist to the AI-generated story.
Rob Lennon created the almost 6-minute Barbie animation over the weekend. According to the video’s description, he used the following technologies:
- RunwayML Gen-2 image-to-video
- Midjourney image generation
- ElevenLabs voice synthesis
- Wav2Lip AI lip-sync
- Story concept by Claude-2 (Anthropic AI)
- Artlist royalty-free music and sound effects
He said on YouTube that it took about 25 hours to make the entire short film. “A lot of the prompts took 3-10 takes, and there’s time waiting for the render, reviewing the footage, editing, exporting for lip sync, etc.”
The AI Barbenheimer trailer
Mike Fink and Caleb Ward from Curious Refuge have used AI tools and animation techniques to create a Barbie and Oppenheimer mashup trailer: Barbenheimer. The team also received creative assistance from Shelby Ward.
The story revolves around a race against the Nazis to prevent them from acquiring a powerful bomb. Enter the brilliant and versatile protagonist, Barbie, portrayed as a multi-talented scientist, doctor, flight attendant, astronaut, Marine Corps medic, paleontologist, veterinarian, and a three-time Olympic gold medalist.
Amid well-suited vibrant visuals and music, Barbie and her team imagine a future full of possibilities and fabulousness. They are determined to defeat the Nazis while looking impeccable doing it. The plot takes an unexpected turn when Barbie’s secret laboratory is visited by her dashing companion, Ken.
The animation in the trailer is of top-notch quality, blending with coherent dialogues and sensible narration. However, it becomes apparent that the characters are AI-generated, though this doesn’t detract from the overall appeal. In the comment section of the YouTube video, viewers are showering praises upon the trailer, hailing it as a “masterpiece.”
AI Barbie Selfie Generator
Warner Bros. and their marketing agency, Bond, have collaborated with PhotoRoom, an AI-based photo editing app, to create an exclusive Barbie filter. The special filter enables fans to morph into Barbie characters.
To use the selfie generator, take or upload a photo of yourself. The generator suggests you smile. For the best results, follow this helpful tip: hold your phone further back to achieve a flattering angle and ensure you are in a well-lit area.
According to SimilarWeb, the selfie generator website attracts approximately 500,000 monthly visitors. Launched in April, Barbie Selfie Generator has attracted over 13 million uses.
IoDF “These Barbies are Queer” Collection
The Institute of Digital Fashion (IoDF) has launched a new Barbie collection inspired by London’s queer club nights. The collection features six dolls representing one of the city’s most popular queer clubs. The dolls, created with AI, are dressed in subversive androgynous fashion, vibrant colors, and latex to embody the spirit of freedom and self-acceptance.
The collection is a tribute to the rich culture and dynamic atmosphere of London’s queer club nights, which are increasingly under threat from gentrification. IoDF hopes that the collection will inspire young people to embrace their identities and challenge traditional conventions of self-expression.
Political Figures Dressed in Barbie Colours
Twitter posts have circulated AI-generated images of politicians, such as U.S. President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama, wearing pink suits to celebrate the Barbie release. Freelance film editor Duncan Thomsen from Brighton used AI to create hilarious Barbie transformations of famous figures, inspired by the buzz around a new movie featuring Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie as Barbie. Thomsen programmed the AI using the Midjourney software, referencing billions of online photos. The collection includes amusing images of Margaret Thatcher in pink and Kate Middleton as a Barbie doll, capturing each person’s essence with Barbie’s features.
AI-Generated Barbie Song by Johnny Cash
YouTube channel “There I Ruined It” released an AI-generated cover of Johnny Cash singing the “Barbie Girl” song. With over 1.1 million views, the rendition of the 1997 Aqua hit was shared just before the release of the latest Barbie movie. The two-minute video features a voice remarkably similar to the legendary country singer passionately performing the chart-topping track.
Another impressive “Barbie Girl” AI Cover was generated with the voices of Beavis and Butt-Head.
Barbie-Inspired Dream Girlfriend
DreamGF has introduced an AI Barbie girlfriend that is a customizable and delightful virtual companion. The AI allows users to interact, chat, and build relationships with AI Barbie through text messages, voice, and photos. Moreover, the technology was meticulously trained to embody the essence of Barbie, offering a personalized and emotionally enriching experience beyond traditional online dating.
