BlackBerry Report: 75% of IT Decision-Makers Consider Banning ChatGPT and Other Generative AI Tools

ChatGPT and other generative AI applications are facing increasing resistance from organizations worldwide, according to a new report by BlackBerry. Based on a survey of 2,000 IT decision-makers from eight countries, it reveals that 75% of respondents are either implementing or considering bans on these apps within their workplaces.

The main reasons for the bans are concerns about data security, privacy, and corporate reputation. In addition, 83% of respondents expressed worries that unsecured apps could compromise their corporate IT environment. The report also shows that most bans (61%) could last for a long time or indefinitely.

The survey indicates that the primary cause (67%) for blocking ChatGPT and similar generative AI tools in organizations is the potential data security and privacy risk. Another major concern (57%) is the possible damage to corporate reputation. The following roles are most involved in making such decisions:

  • CIO/CTO/CSO/IT (72%)
  • CEO (48%)
  • Legal Compliance (40%)
  • CFO/Finance (36%)
  • HR (32%)

The survey also revealed that over 80% of the respondents are worried that unsecured apps could pose a cybersecurity threat to their corporate IT environment.

Despite their inclination to restrict the widespread adoption of emerging technology, most surveyed IT decision-makers from BlackBerry recognize the potential benefits of generative AI applications in the workplace. They envision advantages like improved efficiency (55%), innovation (52%), and enhanced creativity (51%). The respondents also strongly favor AI tools for cybersecurity defense (81%).

“Banning Generative AI applications in the workplace can mean a wealth of potential business benefits are quashed. At BlackBerry, the pioneer of AI cybersecurity, we are innovating with enterprise-grade Generative AI, keeping a steady focus on value over hype, and are exercising caution with unsecured consumer Generative AI tools,”

said Shishir Singh, Cybersecurity CTO at BlackBerry.

According to a report by Microsoft, most workers are willing to use AI to help them with their work, even if they are worried about losing their jobs to AI. It shows that 70% of workers would delegate as much work as possible to AI to avoid burnout, while 49% of them are concerned about their job security. The report also suggests that AI can boost creativity by assisting workers with generating and editing ideas.
