Google Labs unveils Pitchfork, an AI that can convert old code to new code and rewrite itself

In Brief

Pitchfork, which teaches code to write and rewrite itself, has been moved into the Google mothership, signaling its growing importance

Self-coding and self-updating AI algorithms appear to be on the horizon. There are talks about Pitchfork AI, a top-secret Google Labs project that can independently code, refactor, and use both its own and other people’s code.

This type of AI has actually been discussed for a long time, and DeepMind mentioned it at the beginning of the year along with the AlphaCode AI, which, according to them, “code programs in competitive level” as a middle developer. However, since February, there hasn’t been any more interesting news.

Google Labs unveiled Pitchfork, an AI that can convert old code to new code

The Pitchfork project was started by Alphabet holding’s X division, which does all the intriguing things, and was taken over by Google Labs in the summer. Moving under the wing of Google is an indication that the project is highly valuable to acquire and that they have the chance to save money on development.

Pitchfork is required to learn the programming language and develop new code, but the corporation already knows the principles because it analyses the key programming paradigms before applying them. A general-purpose plan was developed on the project’s original plan to use the Python codebase within Google for new versions without involving programmers.

There are already contentious arguments on the network, ranging from “no one writes code better than a person” to “learn a language that will serve AI,” even if everything is currently at the level of rumors and it is unclear at what stage the development is. Roughly five years ago, many people made fun of generative AI and the fact that it cannot replace people.
