Sotheby’s auctions phygital rings on the “Art As Jewelry As Art” auction
Traditional auction house Sotheby’s will host a Web3-themed auction, “Art As Jewelry As Art” in partnership with Metagolden. The auction will be focused on jewellery by artists, featuring 150 pieces from Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, and other renowned creators.
Metagolden is a Web3 platform that focuses on luxury collectibles including jewelry, art, and fashion. The company collaborates with artists, brands, and digital creators. For instance, Metagolden has previously partnered with Decentraland, Theory, Fred Segal, Kwiat, and Mood Operandi to present the new vision of luxury items.
The platform provides collectors with phygital items—when purchasing an NFT, customers also receive physical pieces. Metagolden with provide Sotheby’s with digital versions of the jewelry pieces.
“This selection of artists’ jewelry aims to reintroduce these works to the discerning collector in a new context and as a defined category of art for a collection that is not only intended for adornment, but also as a means of personal expression.”
—Sotheby’s Artist Jewelry Specialist, Tiffany Dubin.
The sale will be divided into “chapters” based on artistic movements: kineticism, abstract expressionism, sculpture, surrealism, avant-garde, maverick, minimales, modernism, and visionaries. Additionally, the auction will feature an “Ethereum Expedition” ring made of 18k gold and emerald. The piece was inspired by space and intercontinental rocket launches.
The bidding opens on September 23 and goes through October 4.
