Apple to introduce VR/AR headset “Reality Pro” in spring 2023

In Brief

Apple’s long-awaited mixed reality headset dubbed “Reality Pro” is expected to come out this spring.

The headset was known by the codename “Borealis,” but Apple’s new device will be publicly called xrOS, rumors say.

Apple’s VR/AR headset “Reality Pro” to launch in spring 2023

Apple should announce its new AR/VR headset, likely named Reality Pro, this year in spring, with the product arriving in the fall.

Apple began developing a high-performance AR headset in 2017 and hoped to have it on the market by 2019, Mark Gurman wrote on Bloomberg. However, the plan for the launch got delayed year by year (2020, 2021, and 2022) until finally, Apple announced its XR headset for 2023. The Reality Pro should be presented before the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which takes place in June.

Gurman mentioned that Apple shared the device with some high-profile software developers to test it on third-party apps. The headset’s operating system, “Borealis,” would be publicly known as xrOS.

Mixed news listed several features of Apple’s Reality Pro:

  • Built from aluminum, glass, and carbon fiber, it’s compact and lightweight.
  • Power is issued from a replaceable waist-mounted battery.
  • There are two built-in processors, main SoC (M2) and video processing (ISP). The latter is essential for high-quality mixed-reality applications.
  • Integrated H2 chip delivers ultra-low latency audio transmission to Apple’s AirPod and integrated speakers in the headband.
  • Quick dial that allows users to switch between the virtual and physical.
  • Corrective lenses.
  • Automatically adjusted lens distance.
  • 120-degree field of view.

Rumors also said that the iOS 17 update could be less significant than Apple originally planned it to be, as the company has been focusing more on the upcoming XR headset.

Apple is also planning to add AR experiences to its stores. For example, after entering a store, a customer could point their iPhone toward any product in the store, and a graphic would come up on the screen, giving details about pricing and specifications. Bloomberg wrote that Apple had been working on the AR in-store service before the launch of iOS 14 in 2020 and has recently started testing the feature at stores.
