Andreessen Horowitz Opens an Office in London

In Brief

A16z announced the opening of an office in London to focus on crypto.

The London office will be led by A16z’s general partner, Sriram Krishnan.

A16z Crypto, a venture capital company run by Andreessen Horowitz, announced it is building its first international office in London less than a week after American regulators unveiled their most severe actions to date against the digital assets sector. Despite the fact that regulation must foster growth while safeguarding customers from fraud and manipulation if cryptocurrencies are to prosper, the corporation claimed that the United Kingdom has a clear regulatory framework.

The first office outside of the United States will be established in London and will be led by Sriram Krishnan, a general partner of A16z. He will lead building a team to “grow the crypto and startup ecosystem in the UK and Europe.”

The action comes only one month after a16z published a state of the crypto report on the drop in American crypto-related activity, albeit the United States was not particularly addressed in the statement.

“I am thrilled world-leading investor Andreessen Horowitz has decided to open their first international office in the UK, which is testament to our world-class universities and talent and our strong competitive business environment. While there’s still work to do, I’m determined to unlock opportunities for this technology and turn the U.K. into the world’s Web3 center,” said U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in a statement.

According to a16z, it is essential that regulatory frameworks are created in a way that facilitates decentralization rather than obstructs development. An approach to blockchain and digital asset regulation is being used by UK politicians and regulatory authorities.

While expressing interest in the U.K., the investment company does not forget about its home country.

“We will remain heavily invested in the U.S. We continue to be committed to working with U.S. policymakers and regulators to push for more regulatory clarity for crypto startups here,” said A16z.

In October 2022, Andreessen Horowitz announced the launch of its crypto accelerator called the “Crypto Startup School.” The program is aimed at web3 founders and includes studies of the steps involved in building a crypto startup, from protocol design to go-to-market. According to the announcement, A16z also plans to establish a Crypto Startup School in London in next spring.
