Alibaba Launches Tongyi Qianwen, the Latest ChatGPT Competitor in China’s AI Race
In Brief
Alibaba Cloud has launched its new AI chatbot, called Tongyi Qianwen.
The chatbot has been made available for beta testing for corporate clients on an invite-only basis.
Alibaba has launched its own artificial intelligence tool Tongyi Qianwen to compete with ChatGPT, the popular chatbot developed by Microsoft-backed OpenAI. The Chinese tech giant has announced through WeChat invitations to corporate clients to participate in the beta testing of the chatbot. The move is part of China’s initiative to develop its home-grown technology to rival the success of Western tech firms.
The name Tongyi Qianwen is partially based on the teachings of the ancient philosopher Mencius and roughly translates to “Truth from a Thousand Questions.” The website for the service is currently only available in Chinese and will likely be in Chinese only.
Alibaba’s cloud computing division posted a teaser on social media which contained a message: “Hello, my name is Tongyi Qianwen. This is our first meeting, and I welcome your feedback.”
According to Reuters, Alibaba Cloud will formally launch Tongyi Qianwen at an event in Bejing on Tuesday, where Daniel Zhang, the CEO of both Alibaba Group and its cloud division, is scheduled to speak. Other tech companies, including Baidu Inc, have also entered the race to develop AI chatbots, with its Ernie Bot currently only available to trial users. Huawei Technologies, a network gear manufacturer, is due to unveil its own natural language processing AI model, called Pangu, at an event on Saturday.
China’s stance on AI is heavily influenced by the Chinese Communist Party’s centralized decision-making process. Recently, the Ministry of Science and the National Natural Science Foundation of China launched a plan called “Artificial Intelligence for Science,” which aims to accelerate the use of AI in key areas of science and technology, such as drug development, gene research, and biological selection. This plan aligns with China’s strategy of utilizing AI to achieve scientific and technological breakthroughs.
